Three Decades of in Situ Sea Surface Salinity Measurements in the Tropical Pacific Ocean |
1969-1998 bucket data |
Data origin. The so-called "bucket data"
(about 156,000 items) originate from bucket measurements collected via an IRD
ship-of-opportunity program operated from Nouméa (New Caledonia) and Papeete (French
Polynesia) during 1969-98 and 1976-92, respectively. SSS measurements were obtained from
water samples bottled by ship officers every 30-60 nautical miles, and later analyzed on
shore by laboratory salinometers. Validation procedure. The measurements were tested systematically through basic procedures that verified internal consistency and climatic limits. Spurious SSS measurements were further detected through objective criteria based on multiples of sample standard deviations (±5, ±4, and then ±3.5) computed in 2° latitude by 10° longitude rectangles. Additional information about the bucket data can be found in Delcroix and Hénin (J. Geophys. Res., 96, 22135-22150, 1991). Data access. The bucket data are available as an ascii file (file bcksss.gz). Click on the named files below to download |
