DOI Registration Process

Digital Object Identifiers or DOIs are registered, managed, and operated through a series of entities that form a pipeline infrastructure. The RDA uses the DataCite DOI registration service to create a DOI for a dataset. During the registration process, required dataset metadata is submitted to DataCite, who manages the metadata and the relationship with the International DOI Foundation. DataCite stores the metadata in a repository that is searchable through a user interface. The DOI Foundation operates and maintains the DOI system to ensure longevity and URL resolution.
